Case Research Foundation | Annual Report 2024
Helping keep the classroom vital and alive, grounded in the shifting complexities faced by managers around the world. Paul R. Lawrence Fellowships, granted by the CRF, enable doctoral students and early-career faculty members to attend the annual conference of the North American Case Research Association (NACRA) for specialized training in case research, writing and teaching.
“By bringing in talented early-career scholars from around the world, our fellowship program helps promote the development of outstanding cases that will be relevant to the experience of students from many cultures.”
introducing our new chair, Dr. Armand Gilinksy
Our founder, Dr. Anne Lawrence, is retiring as chair of the Case Research Foundation at the end of 2024. We are delighted to announce that NACRA has appointed as her successor Dr. Armand Gilinsky. Armand is Professor of Business (Emeritus) at Sonoma State University, where for 30 years he taught strategy and served as director of the Entrepreneurship Center, Wine Business Program, and Small Business Institute. A distinguished case writer, Armand has published over 50 cases, as well as articles and books on strategy, social entrepreneurship, and the wine business. He has served as president of NACRA, editor of the Wine Business Case Research Journal, and guest editor of the Case Research Journal. Learn more about Armand on his personal website.
A word from Anne:
“I am proud of the work the foundation has accomplished during its first decade. It has been a great honor to support and mentor the dozens of impressive early-career scholars who have come through our fellowship program. Now, I am ready to transition more fully out of professional work to spend more time with family and friends, travel, and pursue creative projects, especially non-academic writing. I have known and worked with Armand for 25 years, and I know he will do a great job as CRF chair.”

Nermeen Shehata & Michael Goldman
Nermeen Shehata, PRL Fellow ’17, is an associate professor of accounting and director of the El-Khazindar Business Research and Case Center at the American University in Cairo. In December of this year, the Center sponsored its inaugural annual case conference, the first ever focusing exclusively on the Middle East and Africa. The event brought together case experts from all over the world to address the needs of educators and students in the MEA region. The keynote speaker was another PRL Fellow, Michael Goldman ’15, who spoke on “Making and Demonstrating a Real Impact in Case Research.” Congratulations to both Nermeen and Michael for the impact they are having through their work!

Fundraising
In 2024 (through mid-December) we have raised $22,165. We are grateful to NACRA, to our institutional sponsors (Ivey Publishing, Emerald Publishing, SAGE, and the Open Access Teaching Case Journal), and to many individual donors for their support.
Our fundraising goal for 2025 is $25,000.
Assessing our Impact
This year, board member Maria Ballesteros-Sola and PRL Fellow ’22 Lam An conducted an online survey of past PRL fellows to gather information about the impact of the fellowship program. Former fellows from 14 different countries responded.
Of all the past PRL fellows who responded:
100% use cases in their teaching
75% have published a case since their fellowship
50% are members of NACRA
47% submitted a case to the NACRA conference after their fellowship year
22% are members of another case research organization or case teaching center
