Case Research Foundation | Annual Report 2022

Helping keep the classroom vital and alive, grounded in the shifting complexities faced by managers around the world. Paul R. Lawrence Fellowships, granted by the CRF, enable doctoral students and early-career faculty members to attend the annual conference of the North American Case Research Association (NACRA) for specialized training in case research, writing and teaching.

By bringing in talented early-career scholars from around the world, our fellowship program helps promote the development of outstanding cases that will be relevant to the experience of students from many cultures.
— Anne Lawrence, Chair of the Board

Our 2022 Fellows

This year, we received 107 completed applications (59 doctoral students; 48 early-career faculty).  We were pleased to award 11 Paul R. Lawrence Fellowships in 2022.  Meet our 2022 fellowship recipients here.

The 2023 conference will be held in San Antonio, Texas.

We plan to bring in a new cohort of Fellows in 2023 and also to invite Fellows from previous cohorts who were unable to attend due to difficulties obtaining travel visas.

ADDING VALUE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

With NACRA and our institutional sponsors, the Case Research Foundation has worked to provide professional development opportunities to members and former fellows throughout the year—not just during the conference.

Karin Schnarr | PRL Fellow ‘15

Meredith Woodwark | PRL Fellow '17

Karin and Meredith, both on the faculty of Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada, have written a new book, which will be issued by Edward Elgar Publishing in the summer of 2023. How to Write Great Business Cases is an easy-to consume guide for individuals looking to get started writing and publishing real-world, decision-based business cases and for current case authors who are looking to take their case writing ability to the next level.

“We are excited to share with the broader academic community what we have learned about case writing through writing, publishing and teaching business cases,” Karin told us.  “What really kicked off my case-writing journey was the opportunity to be an inaugural PRL Fellow, meeting a community of fellow case writers who have become colleagues, friends, and collaborators.  That would not have been possible without the generous support of the CRF.”

Meredith added, “The guidance and mentorship of the PRL Fellowship leadership and the CRF more broadly were critical for me to grow as a case writer.  I am so grateful to the CRF for their support and applaud them for the ongoing work they do to foster new generations of academics interested in case writing.”

Financials

Fundraising

This year, our fundraising goal is $20,000.  Our expenses were higher than usual in 2022, because for first time since 2019 we held an in-person conference.  We also provided financial support to several Fellows from the 2020 and 2021 cohorts, who were unable to attend in-person because of the pandemic.  However, we were able to carry over funds from the two covid-impacted years, so our financial needs for this year have been relatively stable.

Our Administrative Costs

Our board of directors, faculty mentors, and committee members volunteer their time. We receive in-kind donations from the North American Case Research Association and other friends. Our administrative costs support website development, fellowship marketing, and management of the selection process.
